Donwload Ubuntu and Kubuntu Gutsy Gibbon from usenet.

Tag: Distros, Linux, LiveCDs, Ubuntu, UsenetVlogcanic @ 3:40 pm

If you haven’t downloaded Ubuntu or Kubuntu’s new Gutsy Gibbon release because of the download rush or just because you can’t or won’t download through ftp or http, there’s allways the usenet.

Over the last few days the Ubuntu iso images have been posted in various usenet binary groups, most notably alt.binaries.cd.image and alt.binaries.ftd.

Not every single possible Ubuntu variant is there but if you want the standard desktop release, the alternate installation release or the server release in both 32 and 64 bits as well as the Kubuntu desktop, those are available –Kubuntu is in another group, alt.binaries.warez.linux. Just in case: Kubuntu is Ubuntu with KDE instead of Gnome and the server installator do not install a GUI.

Those posts are about four days old at the time this text is being typed and if you have a really good usenet service, such as Giganews, you have 200 days before the posts are lost.

Happy download.

The new Ubuntu Studio Gutsy 7.10 is ready for download.

Tag: Distros, Linux, LiveCDs, UbuntuVlogcanic @ 1:28 am

Ubuntu Studio’s new release (version 7.10) is now available. It is a non official Ubuntu flavor targeted to the multimedia crowd which makes a point to show what the GNU/Linux world has in store for multimedia enthusiasts.

It’s different from the standard Ubuntu releases in that the default package selection is customized for the multimedia workstation: audio, video and graphics creation and edition. Another important difference is in the default kernel selection: instead of the standard Ubuntu Linux kernel, Ubuntu Studio ships the real-time Linux kernel in order to optimize multimedia performance.

What’s new in Ubuntu Studio 7.10

Among the new features in 7.10 is the first 64-bit version ever (Canonical had a hand on that, according to the release notes) as well as the inclusion of all the Ubuntu Studio packages in the usual Ubuntu
repositories so that upgrades will be easier in the future.

How to get it

Ubuntu studio can be downloaded from the official web site as an .iso image for a DVD –don’t jump, it’s barely too big for a CD-R so it’s not so long a download.

Albus Dumbledore is gay according to… J.K. Rowling!

Tag: Harry Potter, LiteratureVlogcanic @ 2:16 am

The seven novel long series is over, we all know the ending, we know what happened to Voldemort, what the other horcruxes were, the way Harry prevailed, and what lay behind the perennially ambiguous behavior of Severus Snape.

We didn’t know everything it seems.

Just as the hype following the last book in the Harry Potter series was starting to fade it becomes clear that J. K. Rowling’s characters are still very much able to stir the media. How so? Well, the author’s just announced that Albus Dumbledore, one of the main characters in the Harry Potter series, Harry’s mentor and headmaster of Hogwarts School of Magic is gay. Yup, Dumbledore is gay.

She made the explosive announcement at a question and answer session at New York’s Carnegie Hall.

It’s everywhere now: Reuters, The Washington Post, The Observer.

Can you believe the noise this is all making? Having a celebrity comming out of the closet is one thing… but this is a fictional character!

Just when I thought the time had come to put all Harry Potter theorizing to bed, comes this announcement. It seems things can still get interesting.

Waiting for Fluxbuntu’s new release.

Tag: Distros, Linux, LiveCDs, UbuntuVlogcanic @ 1:00 am

So… the whole Canonical Ubuntu family is now available as Gutsy Gibbon and there’s even a new member, Gobuntu, for the free software enthusiasts. All I can say is that I’m still waiting for one unofficial Ubuntu cousin to be released: Fluxbuntu.

Fluxbuntu is not a Canonical proyect but rather an independent distro based in Ubuntu. The difference between Fluxbuntu and Ubuntu is the desktop environment and window manager: Fluxbuntu uses the ROX desktop environment with the Fluxbox window manager instead of the typical Metacity and Gnome used by Ubuntu.

That difference translates into lower system requirements and better performance as Fluxbox is very light and simple so Fluxbuntu offers all the goodness in Ubuntu with higher performance –or the ability to run in even older systems.

According to Fluxbuntu’s official page (which is now undergoing some kind of maintenance) the release is barely two days away.

I can’t wait.

GParted LiveCD

Tag: Distros, Linux, LiveCDs, LiveUSB, New ReleasesVlogcanic @ 1:36 am

Gparted LiveCD is a minimal Linux distro (about 50 MB) available as a LiveCD .iso image which fits into a business card sized CD-R. It can also be turned into a LiveUSB.

Gparted LiveCD’s sole purpose is to allow you to boot from it so you can partition or re-partition the hard disks in almost any computer –because it’s very light it can run even in 500Mhz systems with as little as 64 MB in RAM — using Gparted, the Gnome partition manager.

This distro is Getoo-based, fast, small, with a 2.6.22 kernel in the latest version and with an Xorg Fluxbox GUI. And yes, you can edit NTFS partitions with it.

There are 13 file systems suppported in various degrees.

Here are the links so that you can check the features, downloads, and instructions to build your own LiveUSB.
