Minislack got started by Jean-Phillipe Guillemin as a Slackware-based Linux distro. From version 1.2 onwards it was rechristened Zenwalk as it began to move away from Slackware –binary package compatibility is still preserved.
The GUI is Xfce by default with KDE and GNOME avialable for installation.
This is a multipurpose distro for i686 processors –i486 are supported but not recommended. It offers internet, multimedia, desktop and other apps out of the box as well as many more specialized software such as developer’s tools so it’s specially well suited for computer programmers and yet there’s something in this distro for every kind of user, from the less experienced to the experts.
There’s only one sigle program for every task in order to achieve lightness, speed and reliability.

Zenwalk Editions

Zenwalk is available in four different editions:

  • Standard. Which is the complete desktop OS. Once installed it’s ready for writing code in several computer languages, desktop tasks, multimeidia playback and is also meant to be easily customizable for service uses.
  • Core. Full system, no GUI. Made for those who prefer to customize their desktop’s graphical environment from scratch.
  • Live. This is the LiveCD, which is just as fully featured as the Standard edition only it runs without HDD installation. The availability of programming tools in this LiveCD makes it a bit of a rarity.
  • Server. Optimized for service use and almost 100% compatible with Slackware.

System requirements.

According to Zenwalk’s homepage, all you need is a Pentium III system with 128 MB RAM and 2GB on your hard drive.
