I’m one day late for this, but the big news in distro release (at least until Ubuntu Gutsy comes out) is that Mandriva Linux 2008 is now released and ready for download/purchase.

Features in the new 2008 include: KDE 3.5.7, the latest Gnome, kernel version 2.6.22.9, drivers for ATI and nVidia video cards –so that you can take full advantage of another new feature: the CompizFusion 0.5.2 3D desktop.

The system requirements are: 1 Ghz processor, 256 MB RAM minimum, and from 3 to 4 GB in your hard drive.

It’s available as a LiveCD and installer or in a traditional DVD installer.

Granular FunWorks 2007 released.

Tag: Distros, Linux, LiveCDs, New Releases, NewsVlogcanic @ 12:32 am

It’s hard to come by a release announcement promising more than today’s FunWorks 2007.

They call themselves a One Stop Distribution, which means that all and every apps you’d ever need are already available in you installation DVD. Wow! This includes multimedia support out-of-the-box, latest versions of all major applications and the freedom to easily switch between KDE, Xfce, Englightenment and Looking Glass.

This distro aims to provide a very easy to use Linux for new or curious users but also all the features a more experienced user could need or want.

The whole thing comes packed into one single LiveDVD ready for download and a bit less than 2 GB in weight.

Lots of apps, usability and eye candy on this one –or so it would seem. Actually, it seems it really carries all the useful stuff, but I can’t find the system requirements anywhere.

This one should be interesting to try some time soon.

New release: Zenwalk 4.8

Tag: Distros, Linux, New Releases, NewsVlogcanic @ 11:34 pm

The stable release for Zenwalk Linux 4.8 is now available.
According to the Zenwalk home page this is the fastest working version so far.
Some of the new features are:

  • Kernel is 2.6.22.9 which has a new wireless stack and the very anticipated scheduler for better reactivity and lower power consumption.
  • Firefox and Thunderbird are gone. In are their open and free twin brothers IceWeasel and IceDove.
  • New multimedia browsers and players AND 1000 packages ready for downlad from the repository which include OpenOffice 2.3.0, the latest KDE and GNOME.

As allwyas the iso download is remarkably short (less than 500MB) BUT so far the only updated edition is the standard edition. I can’t wait for them to bring the LiveCD on.

The week in development distros.

Tag: Distros, Linux, New Releases, NewsVlogcanic @ 5:19 am

A few release candidates and betas saw the light this last week. Fedora stands out, of course, as well as NetBSD. Except for Kiwi, which is Ubuntu based, most of the activity focused on service software.

If trying out release candidates is your thing, here’s some potential new toys:

  • Turbolinux 11 Server Beta.
  • ClarkConnect Server/Gateway 4.2
  • Fedora 8 Test 3
  • NetBSD 4.0 RC2
  • Frugalware Linux 0.7 RC2
  • Kiwi Linux 7.10 Beta
